The economy is slowing, but your days are just getting busier. Most days it is hard to make breakfast at home, so it is just easier to go to the local coffee shop to get a cup of coffee and a bagel-this will last you for a while at least. However, if you are like me, you never keep track of how much money you are spending in the mornings on things like coffee and bagels. A word to the wise, don't. The amount of money spent on bagels in the morning is incredible. So why not kick the habit of the coffee shop and grab a cheaper, just as easy breakfast from your own kitchen.
Making bagels is not as complicated as it might seem and saving three or four dollars a day is nothing to scoff at. So how do you make a bagel? Here's one way:
Bagel Recipe
To make bagels is very easy, and you probably have all of the needed ingredients in your cupboard already. You need two packages of active, dry yeast, four and a fourth cup of all purpose flour, a cup and a half of warm water, three tablespoons of sugar, and one tablespoon of salt. Now this is just for plain bagels. If you want a flavored bagel you can either take a plain bagel and add stuff afterwards, or you can bake it in. For those in a hurry, baking it in may be the better option.
First mix your flour and yeast together. Slowly pour in the water, salt and sugar, and slow smoothly, so you do not chop up the yeast. For a better consistency, use a kitchen aid to help mix for about four minutes. Then you will need to take it out and knead it by hand until it is fairly stiff, constantly adding flour so it won't stick. You will need to let the yeast work and raise the bread. You can cover your bowl of dough for about fifteen minutes for this to occur.
When that has happened, you should cut the dough into twelve equal pieces, and roll them into balls. Poke a hole through the center and gently pull outward. Again, let the dough sit for about 10-20 minutes to let it rise again. Dip each bagel in boiling sugar water, and then let sick in simmering water for about 5-10 minutes. Then bake at 375F for about 30 minutes.
Make enough for the whole week and save big bucks through the year!
