Selecting a Dutch Oven - Choosing the Best Oven
For Your Cooking and Baking Needs
by Ilse Hagen

A Dutch oven offers you a good way to make stews and pot roasts. It resembles a cooking pot with really thick walls but this time, it has short stands or legs and a lid that fits tightly over it. Selecting a Dutch oven correctly allows you to make the best meals for your family without sacrificing quality and taste.

Fishers of Men

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal live. John 3:16 (NIV)

Selecting a Dutch oven: according to use

Dutch ovens can be selected according to how and where you are going to use them. Basically, they are functional and convenient enough to be used both indoors in your kitchen and outdoors during camping. For outdoors, the Dutch oven should be made of bare and heavy cast iron with 3 legs at the base, a tight lid for supporting the charcoal, and a wire handle. Outdoor Dutch ovens distribute heat internally like typical household ovens.

On the other hand are Kitchen Dutch ovens that are also called "bean pot ovens". Made of heavy cast iron with smooth bottoms and no legs, they are rimless with high domes and 2 handles.

Selecting a Dutch oven: according to materials

Dutch ovens are commonly made of aluminum or cast iron. The latter is heavier (20 pounds) and you need to protect it from moisture as it is susceptible to rusting. Cast iron ovens won't easily burn your food and they retain heat, which makes them ideal for use in cold places.

Meanwhile, aluminum Dutch ovens are lighter at 7 pounds and they are easier to maintain and clean. They won't rust but extremely high temperatures can cause them to melt. However, they cool and heat up faster so they are ideal for cooking food that needs to be cooled down immediately.

It's all in the lid and thickness

In choosing any Dutch Oven, make sure that the wall's thickness is even for equal heat distribution and for sufficient heat retention. The lid should also fit tightly to prevent the escape of steam. Buy a Dutch oven with insulated loop handles for safety purposes.
